Outstanding PA Author and/or Illustrator Award

The Outstanding Pennsylvania Author and/or Illustrator is presented to recognize an author and/or illustrator who is a present or former Pennsylvania resident or whose work represents or reflects Pennsylvania and who has made a notable contribution to the field of literature for youth.

 

Award Application

Previous Outstanding Pennsylvania Authors and/or Illustrators

Criteria:

  • The nominee must have a body of work.
  • The nominee has had at least two (2) books published.
  • The nominee has at least one (1) book in print.
  • The nominee writes and/or illustrates books of interest to children and/or young adults through the twelfth grade.
    • Books appear on the publisher’s children’s list or young adult list
    • Reviews of adult books suggest them for use with adults or children
  • The nominee has received recognition from reviewers and critics. Acceptable forms of recognition are as follows:
    • Books published by a reputable publisher, not be a vanity press
    • The nominee has received other awards
    • The nominee’s books have been reviewed in the media (i.e.Booklist, Horn Book, School Library Journal)
    • The nominee is included in books about children’s or youngadult literature (i.e. Children and Books, Children’s Literature in the Elementary School)
    • The nominee has been featured in person or in reviews in statewide media (i.e. public television, etc.)
    • The nominee need not have received all types of recognition listed above

Selection:

  • After nominations have been received, the chairperson shall announce the names to committee members along with those nominated since the annual conference.
  • These names shall be considered at a committee meeting, by mail, or by telephone, if necessary, and shall be placed on the final ballot for the vote.

 

To nominate an author or illustrator, submit a statement of approximately 250 words stating why the nominee should be considered for this award. Include the following: biographical data on the nominee, professional reviews for three major titles of the nominee’s work, a list of some of the nominee’s major works with bibliographical information, the nominee’s connection to Pennsylvania, and honors/awards received by the nominee.
