Chambersburg Area Middle School, April 4, 2011

Librarian Teresa Miller intoduced Sen. Richard Alloway (R-33, Adams, York, & Franklin) to her students with a Prezi presentation. After Teresa instructed students, the Senator observed students using the POWER Library databases. He stressed the importance of school and learning to read.  Read the  local newspaper article.

Literacy Night: Shaw Students and 21st Century Literacy - A Media Collage (literature, art, music, technology) a new perspective on literacy for the digital age hosted by library media specialist Millie Cammisa
City and State legislators address families and discuss their support of school librarie; Shaw students give book talks, recite classic, modern and original poetry; Art Show featuring Shaw student work; Mentally Gifted Program using Web 2.0 to study, publish and present their findings in the Stock Market Game; Shaw student musicians welcome guests with guitar ensemble; community group Unidos Da Filadelfia! entertains with Brazilian drumming; Math and Reading specialists speak about skill building activities at home; Public Librarians speak about family and youth programs at neighborhood branches. A wonderful celebration of how school libraries can bring the community together for a common purpose - literacy achievement. Sen. Anthony Williams (D-8), Rep. Kenyatta Johnson (D-186), and Rep. Ron Waters (D-191) attended along with many parents and students. 

Kutztown High School, April 16, 2009

Legislators, Education Foundation members, university officials from Temple, Alvernia, Kutztown, and DeSalles, as well as local business leaders were in attendance to discover how Kutztown incorporates information literacy and technology to deliver 21st Century instruction. Students presented projects ranging from scientific experiments and National History Day research, to documentary films, math literature circles, and more. The day was very successful and included coverage from Channel 69, WFMZ TV. The district is looking forward to some possible partnerships with the universities and businesses as a result of the open house. Special thanks to Sylvia Firth, PSLA Event Planner, for coordinating the legislators' visits!

Clay Elementary (Ephrata Area School District), April 7, 2009

Rep. Tom Creighton (R-37) visited Clay Elementary Library where librarian Sally Perry arranged for him to observe 4th graders doing research followed by a lunch with the faculty. Students also gave him a tour of the school. Blue Ridge Cable, Channel 11, and two local newspapers were there to cover the event. Lin Carvell, the PLSA Event Planner, helped Sally with the arrangements for the visit.

North Annville Elementary, April 3, 2009

Sen. Mike Folmer, member of the Senate Education Committee, visited North Annville Elementary (Annville Cleona SD) library to observe librarian Anita Mentzer instructing third graders who then demonstrated how to use the POWER Library SIRS database and the online CultureGrams. The Lebanon Daily News covered the event with the Superintendent, principal, technology coordinator, and a parent in attendance. Anita later stated, "I think he was blown away by what our third graders could do."

Central Dauphin East High School, March 27, 2009

Central Dauphin East High School, Harrisburg, was pleased to host a visit from Senator Piccola. Senator Piccola, Majority Chair of the Senate Education Committee, joined librarian Susan Fulmer in observing students doing research on Power Library's LitFinder and Grove's Art database, Ebsco, GaleNet, COIN career database, and Destiny OPAC on the 77 computers in the library. She highlighted additional student use of technology through a Book Club Wiki, CFF laptops, student-created podcasts, and Skype access for collaborating with other schools. Senator Piccola met with administrators, gave awards for artwork, discussed students' editorials, answered questions from students about issues they were concerned with, was interviewed by a student for the school newspaper, and was taped for Channel 27 News.

Audenried High School Library Dedication, February 17, 2009

Alice Lee, PSLA member organized a school library dedication ceremony at the new Audenreid High School in the School District of Philadelphia. Working with Marybeth Leary, her PSLA Event Planner, they invited some important PA legislators including Reps. Kenyatta Johnson and Babette Josephs. Senator Anthony Williams was represented by Dawn Chavous, his chief of staff. You can view a short video her students produced at the school's website at http://www.audenried.org which was part of the dedication. (To see it, click on library in the left column.) Channel 10 was there, as well as several local newspaper reporters (see the stories below). Alice gave the PSLA-prepared packet and the recent article from the Philadelphia Inquirer about Janet Malloy's library to Reps. Josephs and Johnson. Kal Rudman, a noted Philadelphia philanthropist (see http://www.drexel.edu), spoke and announced that he would begin to start filling the empty shelves by donating several thousand dollars for books! Kudos to Alice and Marybeth!
