Act 48

Chair:  Jennifer Bates and Donna Howe

The PSLA Act 48 committee submits renewals for PSLA to be an Act 48 provider, maintains the documentation necessary for PSLA to be an Act 48 providers, and submits attendees' hours for Act 48.

The PSLA Archives committee needs volunteers to organize, preserve, and make available the historical records of our association. Please contact the chairperson if you would like to join this committee to help with this project. Thank you!

Awards

The Awards Committee establishes, with the approval of the Board, the categories of awards and recognition that the association will grant.  This committee periodically reviews the criteria for all awards and recognition and establishes the form that the award will take for public presentation.  They also determine award recipients and recommend them to the Board for approval.  The committee is made up of five members from across the state.  At present, the following categories of awards exist:

Budget & Finance

This committee audits both the association and the conference books each year. The Treasurer is the chair of this committee.

Conference

Chair: Eileen Kern

Committee members handle every aspect of the annual conference. The Vice-President is the chair of this committee.

Constitution & Bylaws

Chair: Candy Blessing

Committee is responsible for updating the PSLA Handbook annually and revising the policy manual as needed.

Curriculum

The committee keeps members current with best practices in the field.

Intellectual Freedom

Chair:

Members update the association on all aspects of intellectual freedom, i.e. challenges, banned books, and support resources.

Learning & Media

Members develop themes for the year, searches for/writes relevant articles. The Editor of Learning and Media, the official print publication of PSLA, chairs this committee.

 

Legislation

The committee keeps members updated on current legislative issues and promotes and publicizes contact with legislators.

Library Promotions

Members collaborate and promote school libraries in various ways, both on the website and in print format.

Media Selection & Review

The Media Selection and Review Committee consists of three subcommittees:

Best of the Best of Children's Literature - This group serves to highlight high quality literature for grades K-8. This panel reviews all books at that level that have received at least two significant awards or honors, such as the Newbery, Caldecott, the Coretta Scott King Awards, and the “best” lists of SLJ, Booklist, etc., published within the prior year.

 Young Adult Top Forty - This panel reviews all noteworthy books for secondary grade-level readers published within the prior year, as well as reviewing reference materials and professional development literature.

 The Pennsylvania Young Reader's Choice Awards Program - The purpose of this program is to promote reading of quality books by young people in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, to promote teacher and librarian involvement in children's literature, and to honor authors whose work has been recognized by the children of Pennsylvania.

  

All three subcommittees present their findings at the annual PSLA Conference.

  

The Media Selection and Review Committee also provides resources which promote literacy – such as annotated book reviews, book trailers, and materials promoting award participation – to teachers, librarians, parents and students.

Membership

The membership committee collects member information and dues through an online registration database.  Using the information collected, a membership directory is published and sent to all PSLA members.

Nominating

The Nominating Committee carries out the procedures to nominate and elect officers and directors for the Board.

Professional Development

Members develop the annual professional development workshop, conduct training session, assist in coordinating sites and presenters, and manage the Follett Professional Development Award.

Professional Standards

Committee members monitor and research all matters pertaining to standards and certification for the library profession.

PSLA Website & Electronic Communications

Members collaborate with all Board Members and Committee Chairs to make any updates and changes to maximize effective communication for the association. The committee chair is the webmaster for the PSLA Website.

Regional Coordinators

Chair: Connie Burlingame

The Regional Coordinator Committee develops and maintains a network of Access PA regional coordinators to help with legislative alerts, coordinating sites and presenters for regional workshops, discuss local concerns and problems, and recommend potential leaders.

Special Needs

This committee facilitates accommodations for any person with special needs when attending an association function and provides websites/articles as needed for support.

Students

The members implement a program of activities for students attending the annual conference, explore ways to improve contacts and opportunities for students.

Technology

The Technology Committee plans and purchases hardware and software and enhances awareness of new technologies.
